Data Office Hours is an hour-long, ongoing monthly meeting for anyone involved in adult ed data collection and reporting. This session provides support for policy and practice related to NRS data collection.

Teaching Writing: Beyond the Blank Page or Screen
This webinar reviews foundational, evidence-based practices for writing instruction and focuses on practical strategies that encourage learners to produce more writing. The Teaching Writing series is targeted at ABE/ASE English language arts instructors, but anyone who teaches writing is welcome to participate.

Virtual Virginia Open Discussion
This open discussion will be an opportunity for programs to come together and share their plans for piloting the Virtual Virginia adult education online courses. Participants will be able to ask questions and share resources. Any staff involved in the implementation of the Virtual Virginia courses is welcome to attend this discussion!

This PLC is for practitioners who are currently implementing or planning to implement IET programming, including IELCE and PluggedInVA. This first session is going to focus on planning for integrated instruction.

ESOL Beginning Literacy Webinar: The Language Experience Approach
This webinar will present strategies for utilizing the language experience approach (LEA) in the ESOL beginning literacy or multilevel classroom as well as during one-on-one tutoring sessions. We will discuss LEA and walk through the steps of implementing it in different ESOL instructional settings.
Participants will leave the webinar with an understanding of the language experience approach, how it benefits ESOL beginning literacy instruction, and strategies for implementing this strategy in the adult ESOL classroom.

LINCS: Welcome Back to School Inside and Outside of Our Prison Walls
Join LINCS as they welcome educators and administrators back to school in correctional and reentry settings. As we begin the new school year, we’ll explore programs, resources, and tools helpful to teachers and administrators inside and outside of our prisons, jails, and reentry programs. LINCS resources and programming successes across the country will be features, and we hope you will join in to share your work in the community by highlighting successful resources, tools, programs, or even a student you would like to recognize.

SABES: Digital Literacy Tools with a Purpose: Discounted Connectivity and Devices for Students, Staff, and Programs
In this workshop, you will hear about three sources of free or discounted devices and connectivity, and we will discuss successful practices for loaning technology. We will also share a source for assistive equipment for computer users with disabilities.

EdTech Center Strategy Sessions: Statewide Micro-Credentials for IET + Tech Integration in Program Practices
In the first lightning talk, hear about Maine’s All Learning Counts initiative to implement a micro-credentialing framework for Integrated Education and Training (IET) programs. Megan Dichter will share what the framework looks like now, lessons they’re learning along the way, and how the work is evolving.
Following Megan’s lightning talk, the Transforming Immigrant Digital Equity (TIDE) team brings us a toolkit of program practices aimed at integrating technology in recruitment & onboarding, instructional design, and persistence strategies!

LINCS: Math for Today’s Workforce: How Do We Contextualize Math?
How do you develop the teaching practices of Math and Numeracy practitioners? What strategies do you use when supporting adult educators? Join Brooke Istas and Kathy Tracey as we engage in a field directed conversation about promising practices and research-based strategies used to contextualize math instruction and help learners increase their math and numeracy proficiency.

LINCS: Project-Based Learning in ABE and ESL Classes
Projects that integrate technology are a powerful way to give ABE and English learners real-world work preparation. Students can build their knowledge of many topics while developing oral and written communication skills. Carefully-planned projects address standards, support the development of critical soft skills, and give learners a sense of empowerment, not to mention tech skills! Attendees learn about projects they can use right away in their class.

Join Andrea Willis of USA Learns and ESL Teacher Jenni Santamaria to learn about a new and innovative web-based instructional resource that provides interactive language learning opportunities to immigrant and refugee English learners. We’ll consider how to tailor and use this FREE resource to support learner language learning and integration goals.

Literacy Minnesota: Developing and Practicing Reading Fluency
This webinar will focus on the three key components of reading fluency and look at a variety of activities tutors and teachers can try. The facilitators and participants will talk about the mechanics of doing fluency practice via Zoom, Google Meet, Teams or any other remote tutoring tool (including the phone!). Participants will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions and share resources.

In honor of Adult Education and Family Literacy week, join the career pathways and program management groups for a Coffee Talk: Equity Action Planning in Adult Basic Education. Guest speaker, Maribel Ojeda will share some of the work she is doing around equity action planning in Pennsylvania and participants are encouraged to come share work that is happening in other states.
This event is intended to be an open conversation around how adult basic education programs can identify and address gaps in services that are provided to adult learners and increase the diversity of workers that enter into various career pathway pipelines.

SABES: Introduction to Digital Literacy: Where to Begin!
In this workshop, you will learn about WIOA’s definition of digital literacy, ACLS policies, and the Digital US definition of digital resilience. You will review ACLS’s recommended digital literacy standards for students and consider how they can serve as a framework for planning and instruction. You will explore what these concepts look like in real life, including examples from Teaching Skills That Matter (TSTM).
As part of this interactive workshop, you will explore the EdTech Integration Strategy Toolkit to find ideas for activities that fit your class routines and work in small groups to begin drafting an activity to use with students. Visit this website for more information!
Paid Opportunity with World Education: Teaching Skills that Matter Skillbox Conversations
As part of the Teaching Skills That Matter - SkillBlox Research Study , World Education is seeking a small group of educators to participate in 6 one-hour conversations to support the development of new features for SkillBlox between September 2022 and May of 2023.
Those invited and who participate in ALL six conversations will receive a $500 honorarium. As participants in this process, you will also retain access to all of the new features that get developed during the next phase of our project. The first three groups will take place on 09/23, 10/07, and 10/21 at 1 pm Eastern.
The deadline to apply is September 7th, 2022. Chosen participants will be notified during the week of September 12th.

VALRC's Latest Issue of
Our summer issue centers on how our work in adult education impacts immigrant and refugee groups in our communities. Virginia has experienced tremendous growth in its foreign-born populations and the articles in this issue highlight a range of innovative and inclusive practices that programs around the state are using to best serve adult refugee and immigrant groups.
This issue also focuses on trauma-informed, inclusive, and asset-based approaches to programming and instruction to build community, create safe spaces for learning, and support these new Americans’ transitions into their new lives here in the United States.
